Beyond™ Issue 1: Black Day To Freedom was created
as a statement to the global phenomenom of the displacement of people, the
project utilises aesthetics to convey a powerful message that transcends race
and cultures. The book and DVD were self published by Rob Chiu and Prof. Glenn
Hardaker and features over 30 contributing artists from over the globe and
was launched at the ICA. The short film created by Chiu has become critically
acclaimed by peers and press alike and has toured the world via Autour De Minuit’s
short film distribution.
Rob Chiu founded The Ronin as a motion graphics and static imagery
studio in May 2000. His static work has been printed in a number of design
publications whilst his motion work has been shown at a number of high profile
film festivals and exhibitions including ResFest, Onedotzero, Semi Permanent,
NeMe and Edinburgh. He has spoken at a number of design conferences such as
Adobe Max (Seoul), OFFF (Barcelona), FMX (Stuttgart), Toca-Me (Munich) and
London’s Apple store (Regent Street) and has run motion design workshops
at Etic (Lisbon) and the MMU School of Design (Manchester) where he is also
an associate lecturer. Selected clients include The BBC, Channel 4, Digital
Kitchen, Prologue, Shady Ltd, Rocawear, Filmmakers Entertainment, IdN, Beyond™,
Hybrid Studio and Future Publishing. The Ronin is currently represented by
Mr Hyde and Curious Pictures.
