| The aim of the One
Love project
was to document the game of football in its entirety, from small
children playing in the mountains of Peru to professionals playing
at the pinnacle of professionalism for their country. For me,
the vendor selling burgers outside a stadium is just as much
part of football culture as the player on the pitch - and it
was from this viewpoint that I began the photography.
The One Love project covers 26 countries and shows
a cross section of diverse cultures brought together by the commonality
of football – The world’s only truly global sport.
Along the way I saw grown men cry like babies and disabled children
play with courage beyond their years, to this day the influence
of football continues to surprise, inspire and humble me with
equal measure.
The ‘beautiful game’ can transcend
geographical diversity, race and religion, something that I
believe only sport can achieve. It provides a neutral medium
where two parties can play on equal terms, bound by the same
rules.
The One Love project took 18 months to produce
and a year full time to shoot. The photography from ‘One
Love’ received worldwide acclaim and produced a best selling
book that includes imagery from 26 countries over 6 continents.
The accompanying exhibition toured the globe throughout 2006
was viewed by an estimated 1.6 million people.
With the generous support of UMBRO International and their licensees
around the world, the assistance of Apple Computers and RPM London,
the One Love project is now a reality. The confidence, enthusiasm
and dedication they have shown to this project - turned a dream
into a reality.
